For purists, an alternative method is to stir a matcha bowl with a matcha whisk and then fill it with ice cubes. This more traditional approach requires a little more patience and finesse.

Iced Matcha Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder
  • 300 ml cold water
  • ice cubes or matcha ice cubes
  • Optional: sweetener of your choice (e.g. honey, agave syrup, sugar)

Utensils:

Preparation with shaker:

  1. Sifting: Start by sifting the matcha powder through a fine sieve into the shaker to avoid lumps.
  2. Mixing: Add cold water to the sifted matcha powder in the shaker. If you want, you can also add a sweetener at this point.
  3. Shake: Close the shaker and shake it vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. Shaking not only cools the liquid, but also creates a light foam.
  4. Serving: Place ice cubes or prepared matcha ice cubes in a glass and pour the shaken iced matcha over it.

Preparation with matcha whisk:

  1. Sifting: Sift the matcha powder into a matcha bowl to avoid lumps.
  2. Whisk: Add a small amount of cold water (approx. 50 ml) to the matcha powder. Use the matcha whisk to mix the powder and water into a lump-free paste.
  3. Mixing: Gradually add the rest of the cold water while continuing to stir with the matcha whisk to create a light foam.
  4. Serving: Fill a glass with ice cubes or matcha ice cubes and pour the whipped matcha over the ice.

Tip for Matcha ice cubes:

  • Prepare a stronger matcha by using more powder and pour it into ice cube trays. Let the mixture freeze. Use these matcha ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes to chill the iced matcha without diluting it.
